FROG Park Earth Day 2013

We had a great community work day on Earth Day, Saturday April 20. From 9 a.m. to well after noon, the community volunteers showed up to clean the pond and spread new gravel in preparation for the creek to be turned on. A mountain of new fibar was moved into the playground area, new sand was put into the sandboxes and we replaced pavers, sealed roof structures and cleaned the area of debris and garbage.

Thanks to all the volunteers who made the time to help. In particular, thanks to the city for arranging for the new materials we needed and coordinating tools and staff. Special thanks to Katrina Rozelle, Bakesale Betty’s and the Temescal Station 8 Firefighters.

Remember that without your help we cannot keep up with all the park’s maintenance items. We work with the city to support our park and our volunteers to create a clean and safe park for our neighborhood. Check out the images of our workers at the Hardy play area.

‘First Saturday’ Cleanup Spruces Up Frog Park

Over 30 service club and community members worked together during April’s “First Saturday” work day to clear tree trimmings, remove ivy, sweep, rake, prune, pick up debris, clear the area around the sand box, clean out the pond bed in preparation for turning on the creek, and perform other general cleanup.

Special thanks to: BuildOn, Oakland Tech; Key Club, Oakland Tech; Berkeley Kiwanis Club; Circle K, UC Berkeley; Luciano Cortes, City of Oakland gardener; FROG; and DMV Neighbors Association.

Join us at a special June community workday held jointly with the DMV Neighbors on June 15, 9 a.m.-noon. We supply the tools and gloves, just come over to help for 30 minutes or more. Meet at Big Frog Park or Redondo/Clifton.

Upcoming “First Saturday” workdays: July 6, August 3, September 7. All: 10 a.m.- 1 p.m.

ABOUT FROG PARK

The Rockridge-Temescal Greenbelt was created in 2001, culminating years of community effort. More than 1,600 volunteer members of the Rockridge-Temescal Community planned and physically built the structures. FROG Park has since become a central community feature.

Hardy and Redondo playgrounds are focal points for children and families. Walkers stroll the connecting greenbelt path, which is fully accessible for the disabled.

DMV Creekside Restoration Update and Community Review Opportunity

In August 2011, the DMV, without notice, removed 14 trees located along the creekside and in the parking lot on Miles Avenue. The community was outraged, and the DMV agreed to work together with the community to restore the area. True to their word, the DMV has replanted beautiful trees in the parking lot and began working on a creekside plan. Now, FROG, in coordination with DMV Neighbors Association and local residents, has finalized a creekside restoration plan and submitted it to the DMV, with the hope that it can be implemented as soon as possible.

An original plan for the creekside was prepared and presented to the community by the DMV in early 2012. Afterward, FROG retained MIG, the firm who initially developed the greenbelt, to modify this plan to better reflect a restoration design desired by local residents, Farmer’s Market patrons, and the community at large. As a result, this restoration plan reflects the character of the surrounding areas and restores the creekside to create an urban green space that can be cherished by the community, the DMV and its patrons.

Help Your Park: Frog Park Monthly Cleanups Begin October 7

FROG is establishing family-friendly monthly cleanups to be held the first Sunday of every month, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., beginning in October. Join your friends and
bring your kids to rake, plant and tackle child-sized tasks. Oakland Technical High School clubs are partnering with FROG on these events. Meet at Big Frog Park, which remains open during the cleanup. Hope to see you next month! Rain cancels.

FROG Fall Maintenance Day: Thanks for your Help!

Saturday, September 22 was annual maintenance day at FROG Park. With 100 students and teachers from College Preparatory School and a dozen community
volunteers we cleaned the path, sifted sand, swept the basketball courts, removed graffiti from the kiosk and sealed the wood structures (playground, fence and kiosk).

We also were able to uncover one of the clogged main drains in Hardy playground and, with the help of our city gardener, Luciano, we unclogged the drain and made a quick fix to help in case the playground floods again.

FROG Park is an ongoing project for the community, and maintaining it is key to the facilities being available for children and families to use and enjoy safely. Check on upcoming maintenance work days and plans. Thanks again to all who helped and a special thanks to the volunteers and teachers from College Preparatory School!

Meet at Big FROG near Hardy Circle

Join us for our family-oriented spring clean-up day held in conjunction with Oakland’s Earth Day events from 9am -12 noon. Come for half an hour or the entire morning.

Please bring work gloves and gardening tools, or use ours. Activities include playground cleaning, weeding, sweeping, sifting sand, and clearing the pond and creek bed (getting ready for the faux creek to flow). Meet at Big FROG, Hardy Circle (near Miles and Hudson St/ Claremont Ave).Snacks and water provided for kids of all ages. Rain or shine.

Join your neighbors and friends for a bodacious festival to celebrate FROG Park from 12 noon to 2pm. Our lineup includes a juggler, magician, cowgirl with rope tricks, games, and Studio One face painters/crafts to entertain you.

Bring your family, kids and picnic lunch or purchase lunch from one of our food trucks. Big FROG (Hardy Circle near Miles) on April 21 between 12 noon and 2 p.m.

Claremont DMV Tree Replanting Community Meeting Nov. 30

Topic: Claremont DMV Tree Replanting Community Meeting

This summer the DMV cut down 9 mature trees in the creek area.
